Home Run Derby Recap

A quick run down of the excitement, in bullet form:

-Kenny Mayne on kayak
-Morgan and Baker agree that Willie Mays is best player they have ever seen. Boomer obligated to agree.
-Berman yells "back back back" a thousand times

-we get bored and switch to "Making the Band 4". The first group of candidates are introduced to a new group that is coming to battle for their spots in the house. A sing off ensues and we forget all about the Home Run Derby.

The sing-off on "Making the Band 4" was the single most captivating moment on television this year. Reminded me of the first time I saw Maverick and Goose sing "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" and I had a sword fight with my roommate

Goose bumps.

The Home Run Derby is like the Slam Dunk Contest...it was exciting the first few years, but now it is boooooooring....

Plus it sucks even more when Chris Sperman keeps up with his annoying Back back back back...SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!

not surprising you would downplay another event that shows the superiority of the hispanic athlete. Congrats to Vlad and to Rios for an outstanding job. The only surprising thing is that you would think Bonds would have enough of a supply of steroids in his home park to compete in the contest...or maybe he was just scared.

There was a couple of hispanic kids on Making the Band.

Besides, who you kidding, you hate the latinos. Be real.

Sir, dear friend. The event downplayed itself. Having most of the big names sit out made for a less than thrilling build up for the event.

Sorry if it offends you.

But, if you get the chance to catch the latest episode of Diddy's show when it runs again on MTV, don't miss it. You will NEVER hear such a heartfelt rendition of End of the Road.

Sir, firstly, we don't appreciate an unabashed racist devotee of a segregated media addressing us as "brother".

We understand, you meant the term in a derrogatory fashion; as your racist self is want to do.

Secondly, throwing out a few names of young superstars in the making and pretending they are "the biggest names" in the game is either a display of your ignorance of baseball, or a pathetic, gratuitus attempt to throw out a few young Negroes' names.

We see you.

"Hey, look, I found a typo". Cookie or gold star for your fridge? Your choice.

If the title of your blog didn't give away how incredibly boring it would be, we'd be happy to return the favor by spellchecking yours.

And, let's see. Ken Caminetti. Terry Pendleton. Mo Vaughn.

Past MVP's who I don't think even at the time would have been considered among "the biggest names in the game."

One day Howard might be.

But not today.

Seriously, if you have nothing worthwhile to add but point out the occassional spelling error or typo, why bother????

Maybe it is appropriate that you are fecal colored because you are so full of sh*t. You question my knowledge of baseball when YOU wrote in an earlier post that the baseball hall of fame was in Canton, Ohio. Ryan Howard is the defending NL MVP and was the defending contest champion. Prince Fielder is the NL leader in HRs, so for you to not count them as superstars clearly shows that you have no knowledge of baseball today. Not baseball...you know the smallish round white ball being kept from young Negroes so they can't further dominate that sport.

"Ryan Howard is the defending NL MVP and was the defending contest champion. Prince Fielder is the NL leader in HRs, so for you to not count them as superstars clearly shows that you have no knowledge of baseball today. "

i. Howard is a young player who is on his to being a superstar. We already addressed this in another comment and named several previous MVP's who would NEVER be considered "superstars".

ii. Fielder plays in a small market and hasn't yet broken through to the masses.

We never said the weren't fabulous young players.

We simply said you are wrong and hyperbolic in tabbing them "superstars" just yet.

Essentially, you're a dumbass.

i. Howard is a young player who is on his to being a superstar. We already addressed this in another comment and named several previous MVP's who would NEVER be considered "superstars".

You named 3 other players and you couldnt even spell all their names right...why? because you dont know anything about baseball. By the way, even the players you named WERE superstars when they won their MVP awards. You know...MVP..most valuable player..hardly given to any benchwarmers you fool.

ii. Fielder plays in a small market and hasn't yet broken through to the masses.

Fielder won the fan voting for NL first baseman...you know the fans...the masses that he hasnt yet broken through to according to your dimwit logic. The fact that he plays in a small market and plays the same position as Albert Pujols and STILL WON the fan voting totally destroys your argument that he hasnt broken through to the masses. But i am sure you would heap nothing but praise on these guys if they threatened to kill someone, drove drunk, or took steroids instead of being fine role models (or in your language "selling out to whitey").
In summation, you are not only a liar but you know very little about sports as well.

Sir, we use your past history of having poor reading comprehension to refute this accusation. And your past history of arguing with what you wish we had written, rather than what was actually written.

Additionally, your blatant racist stance precludeds you from having any currency when hurling accusations.

False accusations. The truths are there to read. The time hacks are there to see.

"Fielder won the fan voting for NL first baseman...you know the fans...the masses that he hasnt yet broken through to according to your dimwit logic. "

Sir, Ichiro was one of the leading vote getters his first year in the league. Does that mean he was a "superstar" from day 1?

A superstar is someone that transcends the sport. And someone that has built their currency through consistantly being a leading vote getter.

Again, feel free to label Fielder a superstar if he keeps it up for a few years.

One year at the top does not a superstar make.

That is like saying, after a guy gets Rookie of the Year...that he should have a spot reserved for him in the hall of fame.

You bandy the word "superstar" around fulling misusing the term and not understanding the meaning.

Are Field and Howard great young players on the way to superstardom? Sure.

Are they bonafied superstars? No.

Again, this is an argument YOU can't win. Neither player has build the history to support your misuse of the word.

Wrong again.

nation_of_islam_sportsblog said...

"Sir, do recall that, to most baseball fans, Peter Gammons is also a superstar"

Sir, our "friend" censored has decided that any young player that has a big year is a superstar. Not understanding that superstars are either made over time, or by a consensus that their skills are otherworldly (ie, LeBron)...while Howard and Fielder are both on a path toward superstardom, neither has put in enough time to say they do it year after year...and neither was preordained the next coming when they broke into the league.

Our friend censored is simply disagreeing to disagree. His logic is so trained at this point to argue anything and everything that we state, that if we looked up at the sky and said "hey, we are looking up", he'd formulate an "argument" claiming we were actually looking down.

The man is now thoroughly lost in his logic.

First of all you can lie all you want. If only it was as easy to erase your inherent stupidity as it is for you to revise misinformation in your posts. I understand you may have difficulty reading a map but upstate new york is very far from Ohio. You know what you wrote..just have the guts to stand behind your own stupidity.

Fans decide who goes to the all star game. You argued that Fielder hasnt reached the masses because he plays in a small market yet he clearly won fan voting that took place ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY. So even though you dont know much about the sport the people who do clearly wanted to see Fielder participate in the all star events. As for Howard, winning the MVP award means by it very nature that you are a superstar. It is the MOST valuable player. So try to dismiss him because a well spoken african american role model doesnt suit your agenda but hitting over 50 HRs and winning an MVP puts you into that superstar class...you should stick to making up excuses for criminal Pac Man instead of knocking good guys like these.

That is like saying, after a guy gets Rookie of the Year...that he should have a spot reserved for him in the hall of fame.

it is actually nothing like saying that...rookie of the year means you are tops among a small class of rookies...an MVP means you were the best in the league among ALL players....a bigger star among stars...in fact a superstar. I like the way you bend your definition though to include Lebron..maybe if Howard knocks up a few women outside of marriage he would become a superstar to you.

Obviously you know as much about the history of baseball as NOIS knows about the modern game...which is nothing. Look up Mo Vaughns stats and then tell me if his numbers dont reflect a superstar. The numbers dont lie even though NOIS does. There was a span of about 9 years that he was one of the top 5 hitters in the AL...despite knee injuries. Plus trotting out 3 supposed examples is worthless...i mean i can probably find 3 NBA players who share the same last name as their father but that doesnt make it the rule.

You dont answer to any of the facts i posted and that makes you a fool. Mo Vaughn signed a 75 million dollar contract with the angels...sounds like benchwarmer money to me huh? Not all superstars are hall of famers...some careers last longer than others but there was a time when all three of those players could fit that category...Mo Vaughn without a doubt was in that category. Moron...do you not comprehend what is written?. NOIS tried to downplay the importance of the MVP award by trying to find players who won it that didnt have a sustained level of excellence. The award has been given for what? 70+ years and he found 3 examples. Mo Vaughn was one of those examples. For 9 years HE WAS a superstar...look at the stats or get someone to help you if you cant understand numbers. Or is 9 years not a long enough period of time? Mo Vaughn signed his free agent contract with the Angels after 7 SUPERSTAR seasons in Boston. In that case Gale Sayers wasnt a superstar....well done...it is just funny how you all will sell out your own if they dont play up your agenda. NOIS has a clear lack of baseball knowledge (his previous posts prove that) He is much more in tune with the NFL and NBA because more players in those leagues get arrested and fuel his conspiracy theories.

ultrasound tech said...

no, he didn't.

he correctly demonstrated that just winning ONE mvp in an otherwise solid (but not great career) doesn't make one a superstar.

And, by doing so, he PROVED that Howard is not yet a SUPERSTAR

he proved you wrong.

nation_of_islam_sportsblog said...

"The award has been given for what? 70+ years and he found 3 examples."

Sir, I used fairly recent history. Here are some more that were excellent players, but were NEVER superstars.

Boog Powell
Joe Torre
Dick Allen
Jeff Burroughs (I anxiously await your argument that HE was a superstar)
Don Baylor
Willie McGhee
George Bell

Commence your empty effort to suggest Boog Powell was one of the all time greats.

I may not be an expert historian on baseball. But I understand the difference between very good player and superstar.

A superstar is a guy that is headed to cooperstown. A very good player are the guys you are calling superstars.

We despise Peter King, but he has a nice analogy for this....there is the Hall of Fame (for the greats, the superstars) and the Hall of Very Good (guys that may have won an MVP or been a real good player, but weren't greats or superstars).

You don't have the ability to rationalize a difference.

Sad.

A superstar is a guy that is headed to cooperstown. A very good player are the guys you are calling superstars.

Look at the career stats of many that you question. You dont have a clue about baseball. The MLB hall of fame is the toughest to get into..it is a fact that the requirement of having to play a minimum of 10 years to be eligible is a big part of that. Being a superstar for a period of time does not necessarily make you a hall of famer. Don Mattingly, a superstar of his day but not a HOF'er, same for Ron Guidry. Darryl Strawberry as well...was he not a superstar while playing for the Mets? Is David Ortiz not a superstar today? The problem is your definition is wrong and tying it into the Hall of fame is wrong. It again shows that you really dont follow baseball enough to judge...when George Bell for instance played for Toronto he was a superstar..in fact he was the best player on a very good team. That is why the MLB HOF is the best one because unlike other sports who induct almost everyone it takes more than being great to get in..you have to be dominant for your era.

Brady Anderson. The year he hit 50 home runs. He was a superstar.

The rest of his career, that isn't relevent.
