US Women's Soccer Team Coach Fired

The U.S. Women's soccer team has announced that coach Greg Ryan's contract will not be renewed.

Ryan amassed an impressive 45-1-9 record as the national team coach. The only loss coming in this year's World Cup semi-finals.

US Soccer officials stated:

"I'm not going to point to any one factor or one individual decision," U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati said on a conference call Monday announcing the change. "Obviously, coaches' decisions impact games. All that was weighed in."

We wonder why the president would go out of his way to refute that the firing is based on one particular decision? Certainly, such a statement is unnecessary.

Well, unnecessary...unless...it truly is based on one decision that Ryan made.

With the Americans favored to win their third World Cup, Ryan decided before their match with Brazil to make a change in goal, replacing Hope Solo with veteran NEGRO [bold 'Negro' added by NOIS] goaltender Briana Scurry. Solo had allowed two goals in four World Cup starts and had a shutout string of nearly 300 minutes. Scurry, the goalie for the 1999 World Cup champs, had beaten Brazil two straight times.

Interesting.

Ryan chooses to replace the alabaster keeper with a woman of color. The team loses the game. And he is out of a job.

Even more interesting is this: The US team, full of high scoring stars, was shut out. Blanked. Unable (or unwilling?) to score a goal to support their Negro goaltenderette.

"Ryan was 45-1-9 since taking over in early 2005, but Gulati made clear that the lone loss weighed heavily in the decision..."

One loss in 55 games is a deal breaker?

Or, is benching the pale white girl in favor of her melanin rich back-up the true deal breaker?

Perhaps defender Cat Whitehill summed it up best:

"With the standards our team has set, if you don't win, it's hard to keep your job," Whitehill said Monday, a day after players and Ryan were informed of the move. "Nothing against the way Greg Ryan coached, but we didn't play as well as we should have."

All the starting players, who were shut out in the game, will be back with the team.

It wasn't difficult for them to keep their jobs, despite the loss.

But, then again, they weren't the ones that went with the Original Goal Keeper.

it's a real shame.

the problem wasn't the goalie, like you pointed out. the problem was that they team didn't score any goals.

yea, why are you gonna blame the decision on which goal keeper to use, when your team didn't score any goals anyway!

goaltenderette? lol...

i doubt that the race of the goaltender the coach used played a role in the decision to fire him. but really, when you fire someone after just one loss, and they used a black goalie, it sure does look like it had something to do with it.

You are absolutely correct..i dont understand this post..please i need your help in clearing up how NOIS is not race baiting with this post...it seems the implication is that by writing the players were "unwilling?" to score a goal to support the negro goalkeeper that they were possibly losing on purpose. is that not race baiting? A coach is responsible for putting the best team out there and this coach did not..when you give up a goal early in soccer it is extremely difficult to comeback...goals are hard to come by and when a team goes up they go into a defensive mode making scoring even harder. He had the best goalie in the world and decided to bench her for no apparent reason..when a coach makes a move like that and the team loses a big game...the team loses confidence in him and a change is needed. It had nothing to do with the backup being black...again that is NOIS race baiting...any reason to hate whitey is accceptable.

Sebastian said...

Hate to point this out, but the white goalie (or goalie-ette), played pretty damn good as well. Between the two of them, they were both lights out. Kind of like having Peyton Manning AND Tom Brady on the same team.

As far as starting Scurry, it's the coach's choice, but some would say "if it ain't broke...."

For those that can't, then it seems to me that Ryan could have chosen a less important World Cup game to let the competition know they'd have to prepare for both goalies. And the rest of the team as well.

i didn't take it as an implication of such. it seemed like a legitimate question.

see, if you didn't read everything he wrote with a racist chip on your shoulder, you wouldn't feel like everything is 'race baiting'.

NOIS described Scurry in bold face type as the NEGRO goaltender. Bold type indicates the most important part of the description and then he implied that Scurry's teammates were unwilling to score goals. Sir what other reason would there be to make the description that way except to race bait? A black person failed so it must have been white people trying to undermine her....excuses excuses...it is as much a part of the culture as Kool-Aid and chicken.

can you read??? NOIS never said it was white peoples fault...he simply proposed that Ryan lost his job because he started her in goal...even tho the US Soccer people said that was not the case....nois made a case that the guy lost ONE game in his career...and because he made the goal switch, they fired him...what the hell are you reading????

this is sad.

Sir, actually we are following the Austin Scott case right now.

You know, the kid that was kicked off Penn State by Joe Paterno without his side of the story being told, accusing the kid of being out at a bar drinking...when he wasn't. The one that it is turning out that the young lady that accused him has a history that includes a scenario that was virtually the same, that was false.

The kid YOU made a comment about as being a rapist....without waiting for the details.

That Austin Scott.

no i was referring to that rams lineman who beat his wife the other day and got arrested...only a couple of years after he was arrested for another case of domestic abuse...but lets not talk about that...it was actually a white guy who held the guys fist and pushed it into his wifes face.

to translate for you slowpoke...is benching the WHITE girl to play the BLACK girl the reason he got fired....that makes it a race issue. the question wasnt whether playing the backup goalie got him fired...not once you make the racial makeup of the players their defining characteristic.

ultrasound tech said...

Every time NOIS mentions the word, you all jump all over it and misguidedly try to explain that slavery has had no effect on the black community...or you give an example of something that has no relation to the topic at hand as some sort of convoluted rebuttal...it's sad to watch, really.

you take logic and intellect...and just shit all over it.

This is clearly ageism and racism on the part of the older goalie's coach as well as on the female players themselves. Furthermore, the decision to fire a coach for undermining the emotional stability of an entire team by putting in a back-up goalie in their most important game of the season had nothing to do with his firing. Rather, it was the fact that the back-up goalie involved had skin of a specific hue. This is logic at its finest and not a rationalization of any kind.

no, slavery has nothing to do with soccer...but bringing up the statements YOU have made in the past reminds us where your mind is at. and, that you are racist. so, actually, it does have something to do with this thread.

Incidently...you were just complaining about what this post was truly about...race or soccer...and you just typed out in caps that the post is about SOCCER...

ummm...typical of your hypocritical...when the argument goes one way, the post is about race...when it goes another..it's about just soccer...

whoever said that your opinion lacks currency, hit the nail on the head.

your mind and input have NO value.

you can't even decide what this thread was about, you are so consumed with hate of blacks.

everyone else recognized it for what it was....questioning why US Soccer would fire a guy who lost one game and made one decision that in hindsight was questionable...but no...you are stuck on black and white.

it's sad, really.

please tell me that you are not an adult...i cant fathom that a grown up could have such a lack of understanding. I pointed out where NOIS connected it to a racial element..dont you read. You are so caught up in yelling racism that you dont LOOK. The top goalie in the world was replaced by her backup in a huge game...coach's decision...and the team lost...a poor decision cost him his job....those are the facts.
He wrote the team was unwilling to score a goal to support their negro goalie...how is that not introducing a racial element where none exists...before you go calling me a racist just answer that question....i made it as easy to understand as possible but maybe you still want to get your mommy to explain the question.

Again just explain how I made it about black and white when NOIS comes up with the idea that the soccer players were unwilling to score to support their NEGRO goalie. Have the guts to admit it is all about race baiting...and bringing race into every issue regardless of whether it was an issue...but you cant so you just scream RACIST...again interjecting race as a factor in everything is a convenient crutch...a reason to justify failure...disgusting.

okay well how bout this...maybe the coach felt pressure to put in the inferior negro goalie...you know she gotta get playing time not because she is better but just because it is the liberal thing to do...this poor coach is a victim of the failures of affirmative action....it is a dark day for him indeed....affirmative action is what really should have been let go..not this poor coach.
