Dennis Dixon: Heisman In Jeopardy

Question:

Should a player on a team that he led to a #1 ranking in the NC&QB, a #2 BCS ranking and an 8-1 record lose an almost certain Heisman Trophy because of a late season injury?

Oregon's Denis Dixon has been the motor behind the nation's most explosive and exciting offense. His running, passing and unshakable leadership pushed Oregon into position for a BCS title game birth and a #1 ranking in the most accurate poll.

Should Dixon now lose his Heisman because of a poor decision by his coach to start him when an dinged knee was not at full strength?

Dixon has distanced himself from the other players in the Heisman race. The closest competition was Florida's Tim Tebow. Tebow is having a solid season doing a first rate impression of a Negro QB, but Tebow isn't winning. Winning isn't the ultimate criterion for the Heisman, but certainly, when you factor in the awe inviting ability and performance of Dixon with his leading the team to #1; you have no choice but to at least consider it.

And, as we queried, should Dixon's performance thus far simply be pushed aside because he won't be able to finish out the last few games?

The answer is a resounding no.

Dixon has played enough this season to establish himself as the premier player in the college game. To allow his Heisman campaign to be the casualty of an ill advised move by his coach would not be an example of the good sportsmanship that the Downtown Athletic Club generally encourages.

Dixon and his team have certainly suffered the ultimate disappointment because of the decision. By starting Dixon, and effectively condoning his injury, white coach Mike Bellotti unwittingly destroyed his team's moral. After Dixon went out, the team was in a state of shock. Back up QB Brady Leaf, ill prepared to lead the team -had Belloti not started Dixon it's possible that the Leaf would have gotten the reps over the past two weeks to be ready and possible that the team would have been prepared to deal with his shakey presence on the field - conjured memories of a mix of his name sake's (Brady Quinn) performance in big games and his brother's (Ryan Leaf) NFL skills.

Oregon's right to what was a certain BCS title game birth has now blown up.

Let us not deny Negro QB Dennis Dixon his right to a Heisman Trophy.

We trust that Heisman voters around the country will not use this as an opportunity to further hold back the day by day advancement of the Negro QB.

Do the right thing, voters. Do the right thing.

i spit up my coffee on that one!

nice.

Shouldn't the precipitous fall of Oregon from title contention as soon as Dixon was eliminated be a point in his favor as well?

I mean, the team goes from National Title Contenders to losing to Mike Stoops as soon as he removed from the equation. That to me is the sign of a truly valuable and outstanding player.

Dixon 4 Heisman

why exactly is pointing out the skin color of the qb and coach relevent to your argument? oh yeah because you are a race baiting jackass....your bow tie is crooked.

Sir, where was it stated it was relevent to the argument?

And, this post wasn't so much an argument as it was a plea to the many readers of the blog who have Heisman votes to please not strip Dixon of his rights. Rights that are already diminished due to his race.

Again, we never said pointing out race was integral to the post. Although, your protest seems to indicate that maybe it is?

fun blog, but get over it.
Tebow was better than Dixon before he was hurt. The numbers say so.
Tebow is playing the position better than anyone in the nation.
Tough break for Dixon and the Ducks though, great player, good team.
ps I don't believe Dixon's rights were diminished because of his race. He was, I believe, the front runner prior to last night's loss.

Exactly that is why you are nothing but a jackass race baiter..you bring race into everything even when it isnt part of the issue...and when any negro fails to get what you perceive is due them you make it a race issue....when exactly over the last 2o or so years has race hindered a player from winning a heisman....you are so full of crap you must cry shit colored tears.

no not at all...based on talent and achievement alone, Tebow will win the award....nothing at all to do with race.

Oh, then I guess Colt Brennan or the kid at Tx Tech is actually the best, if you wanna just go by numbers....

then if he was denied completing the game because of injury, it should't matter...he should still be the front runner.

unless you want to strip him of his civil rights.

Sir, we made a post.

YOU are the one that is constantly bringing up the race issue. We mentioned the gentlemen's racial affiliation in the post...and you can't refrain from comment after comment bringing it up.

You seem to be the one dropping the line and hook....luckily most here see through your racist taunts. We're above it.

Again, you brought up race. Clearly you believe it has something to do with it....what was it the great Shakespeare gave us as a wordly truism...ahhh yes...'he who doth protest to much'....you keep protesting, even though you have stated there is NOTHING to protest.

Very odd.

NOIS,

I'm sure you've read your first paragraph, but if you follow the logic, any player could play less than a season and win a most valuable player type award.

MVP's lead their team to victory on the field, not from the bench.

Perhaps you could be injured in your last, or next to last game. Even that scenario requires extraordinary performance.

It is a true shame that Dixon got injured. You must really like him to go this mentally gooey.

Sir, there are only two games left.

Additionally, we believe that Tebow's season has had periods in which his play has been hampered by injury....and his team lost.

Georgia comes to mind.

If Dixon can't win.

Tebow can't win.

Some make the placards. We'll call Jesse and Al.

Good one, 'Bassy!

You and NOIS are both fags.

I fully expect Jesse and Al to be at the Downtown Athletic Club if Mr. Dixon does not win the Heisman. Well, first Al is gonna hit that delicious buffet, then he'll get to protesting.

Oregon hasn't had a Negro QB come out of nowhere like this since Akili Smith. If only Cincy needed a quarterback.

I don't see the point in blaming the coach for dixon's injury/the team's loss.

Clearly the team was capable of losing without Dixon, because they did. And so while benching Dixon and preparing the backup could provided a better chance than what actually happened (throwning leaf into the fire after the injury), playing Dixon was obviously the best chance of winning.

Would you seriously not have written a rant had Leaf started the game in place of Dixon and Oregon lost? I can only imagine the words you would write depicting the coach as a racist who benches his star qb only because he's black, and thus dooms the season.

NOI rules!!1 said...

I'm not saying Dixon isn't a great player, and it will require a few more great games from Tebow for me to think Dixon doesn't deserve the Heisman, but there's no reason to villainize Belloti.

"Oh, then I guess Colt Brennan or the kid at Tx Tech is actually the best, if you wanna just go by numbers...."

I was, of course, referring to numbers against similar calibre defenses. Not numbers put up against the pansies Colt Brennan plays.

"then if he was denied completing the game because of injury, it should't matter...he should still be the front runner.

unless you want to strip him of his civil rights."

Dude, less coffee, your leap of logic eludes me there. Unfortunately, if you start cutting up the season because of injury, where will you stop? Stats after game 1? Or game 5? get it? Where would you draw the line?

And what's any of this got to do with civil rights? Come back to earth please.

NOIS,

After a fine night's sleep, you are correct. There's only 2 games left. PLUS the bowl game they'll be invited to. They do still have that pretty good Negro RB, right?

I would like to see Dixon win, but a Heisman candidate needs to start every game. IF he is going to be out a game, it's better to be out early in the season than later.

But, either way Dixon will still play in the NFL. Given the track record of Heisman QB's in the pros, it may be a better thing that Tebow wins it.

Fortunately for Tebow, there is no track record for Sophomore Heisman winning QB's in the NFL. Guess that will be his to write, if he wins...

Good point, I forgot Tebow was a soph.

Sir, actually most of the bowl games are played after the Heisman is announced.

Matt Ryan may be back in the picture after another impressive comeback win against a quality opponent in Clemson.

the Heisman has never before been awarded to a sophmore. not likely a sophmore who's team is not in contention for the national title. and, at this late stage, not even ranked in the top ten. however, i don't think the trophy has ever gone to a player that did not complete the season. this will be interesting.

i now return to my regularly scheduled weeping and cursing. Bellotti, your ass is mine. from Yahoo: "Dixon first injured his knee in Oregon's 35-23 victory at home over Arizona State on Nov. 3. While he knew the extent of the injury, he felt he could still play. "He asked us on behalf of himself and his family to keep that quiet," Bellotti said in a conference call with reporters Friday afternoon. It was Dixon's intention to delay the surgery until after the season, the coach said. He continued with the understanding that any further instability in the knee meant he would have to stop playing, the coach said." So pretty much Bellotti (1) capitulated to Dennis' decision to play on a severely damaged leg and (2) lied to his team -- including the back- up quaterback -- about the starting quarterback's condition.

there was nothing "unwitting" about what Bellotti did.

Ma'am, thank you for supporting with unindisputable factish material that the selfish, evilishness of the white coach was a factor in this latest and greatest disappointment to Duck fans.

But, we have come to expect Pac 10 coaches to let players decide the teams moves, see AZ St.'s previous coach allowing the team to decide who the starting QB should be...

Bellotti's ability to lead the team has now been irretrievably compromised.

Oregon has no choice but to bring in a new coach.

your lips to mighty Allah's ears, sir.

i'll google the Erickson (i assume it was him) idiocy - didn't know that. i saw this nonsense in action a couple of wees ago thru binoculars on the sideline of the 49ers/saints game. Smith lands on injured shoulder; while saints have ball Dilfuck is helmet-on seriously warming up, Smith wearing baseball cap up in Nolan's face arguing. Smith goes back in, re-injured, now can't start. not that Smith's absence is outcome-determinative in our case, but get control of your teams, coaches! shit.

Foxxy Brown said...

oops -- missed the "previous." still sounds like something Erickson would do too

Dennis Dixon on the Heisman:
"I never did (play with it in mind). My teammates know that. I'm playing for them and just having fun in the process in my senior season playing college football," he said.

Fortunately for us, great QB's don't focus on individual honors. That is for the experts (paid amateurs) and amateurs to debate to their own end. This isn't the first time, guys and girls, a player has gone for it despite injury.

"He wore a brace Thursday night and said he had no pain or signs of trouble earlier in the game when he ran 38-yards for a touchdown on the Ducks' first possession."

You can hate on Bellotti, but Dixon wanted it and I would presume the doctors said something like "You're already screwed, you can't screw it up anymore, so.... go win one for the Ducks."

Meantime, Tebow keeps rockin'.

Foxxy Brown said...

thanks for the update, condescending bastard.

"You can hate on Bellotti, but Dixon wanted it and I would presume the doctors said something like "You're already screwed, you can't screw it up anymore, so.... go win one for the Ducks."

then someone needs to sue the fucking doctors for malpractice.

"Meantime, Tebow keeps rockin'."

the negro dixon just did not put up numbers equal to the caucasian QB Tebow....the best player will win and that is Tebow.
