Colleges Hiring New Coaches

The end of the college season means the beginning of the coaching hunt season.

Teams are already unloading some of the fund eating dead baggage that has masqueraded as coaches along the sidelines.

Texas A&M decided that Dennis Franchione's future was brighter as a news letter publisher than as a head coach. Arkansas and Houston Nutt mercifully ended their dysfunctional existence. Tom Osborne gave Bill Callahan a ticket back to the West Coast. Lloyd Carr endured one final, masochistic encounter with the OSU and graciously shut the door to the Big House behind him.

And many less visible positions opened up: Georgia Tech, Duke, Baylor, Colorado St, Mississippi, Northern Illinois, SMU, Southern Miss and Wash State.

As the teams begin to look to fill position, and some are already filled....one thing is apparent:

There is NO interest in minority candidates.

Texas A&M and Mississippi didn't even bother to go through the charade of interviewing any. And, quite frankly, we respect that.

If you don't want Negro coaches in your program, wear it like a badge, don't play the interview game and try to fool anyone. Just flat out say, 'we won't entertain the idea of a Negro being the face of our university'.

Our only hope is that Negro recruits begin to use minority interview/hiring statistics in the formulaic metrics
they use to evaluate Universities during the recruitment process.

Certainly, such statistics would be something that will benefit Sylvester Croom at Miss. St. With Ole Miss not even pretending to want a descendant of chains on campus, and Southern Miss probably going the same route, Croom should be set up to completely dominate recruiting in Mississippi.

It's become clear that these institutions of higher learning can't be trusted as leaders in change. Certainly, it would seem that we would now need to look to the Negro youth to be the leaders of change in this arena.

We'd suggest that any recruit that finds himself on a Top 100 list, contact Grambling State University.

The time has come to unite. It's time for the 100 man march. It's time to create an uber-Team. It's time to send a message to the old white men in the big houses living on campus:

Ignore Negro coaches, and Negro players will ignore you!

And, we would especially like to admonish Duke University in this situation.

Duke announced that they would give special attention to minority candidate consideration.

We find it offensive and egregious of Duke to believe that a minority candidate would be the best fit for their program. The worst program in D-1 football is the one best suited for a Negro coach?

How dare you, Duke!

A Negro coach taking that job will set the movement back 100 years.

(edit.- We were reminded that, as we anticipated weeks ago, Turner Gill will be a real candidate at Nebraska. And while we applaud Nebraska, we wonder if this is really simply extended nepotism. Turner Gill should be given the opportunity to coach Nebraska because he is Negro, not because he is virtually a member of Osborne's family.)

yea, i'm sure ole running back Thuglife Tyrone is sitting there with an excel spreadsheet mathmatically evaluating the process!

That's not exactly striking fear in the hearts of recruiters everywhere, now is it.

He'd better do a lot better if he wants to finish 7-5 again.

Sir,

I wouldn't say there is "NO interest in minority candidates". MAC Coach of the Year (and rightfully so, I might add) Turner Gill is probably the odds on favorite for the Nebraska job (despite the rumblings you might hear about Bo Pelini). Tom Osborne was a groomsman in Gill's wedding. Of course, Nebraska is located a little further north than some of the jobs that have already been filled.

Chuckles said...

Of course, you'd predicted exactly that just a few weeks ago.

Sir, agreed.

Sir, with regard to Turner Gill being part of Osborne's extended family: no coach gets a good gig in Division I-A football without being part of some form of college football nepotism.

That's why it's the Good Ol' Boy Coaches Network.

And despite the fact that Michigan is further north and probably set on the Mad Hatter Les Miles, defensive coordinator Ron English did interview in Ann Arbor.

Should be given the opportunity because he is negro...not because he may be qualified or the best candidate, simply because he is negro...Here you go again, you have a perception that many coaches get their jobs based solely on the fact they are white so your answer is to give jobs to people based solely on them being black...once again you have no solution you just want to be an equal part of the problem...sad.

it is a shame that some schools are so quick to hire certain coaches. mike locksley jr is going to make an amazing head coach. he is a dynamite recruiter and a great offensive mind. it will probably take longer for him to get hired than a white coach in the same position, but whatever school eventually hires him will be very, very happy.

You cant spell and have no command of the english language. So all the top black athletes should go to Grambling or Mississippi State? Don't hold your breath. There's all sorts of things that young black men should do to try and change things, but it will never happen. They've got no one to blame but themselves.

Max A Million said...

I agree with NOIS completely. The BCA and others should quit whining to the white man about jobs they will never get. They are dead set on hiring their own. What is needed is a concerted effort to go into the homes of top black recruits in states like Texas and Mississipi and try to push them to other schools. Even if only 3 or 4 top players go elsewhere, it can be the difference between winning big and losing.

Texas A&M and Ole Miss can't win anything with an all white team.

Just what does being a negro have to do with Turner Gill being considered for the Nebraska job. That in and of itself would set minority hiring back 100 years. Horrors that it could quite possibly be that Gill has been successful and deserves the opportunity because he is a good coach...

I can see why you need this to be the case and wouldn't want Turner Gill to get the job for the right reasons...because he has earned it.

Having Gill get the job that way would really hurt the cause...

What, exactly, will satisfy you? First you claim that schools should interview minority interview stats should be considered by recruits, and that it is an insult to blacks when a school doesn't interview them for a head coaching position.

Then, you go on to accuse the schools actually interested in interviewing/hiring minorities -- Duke and Nebraska -- of either not being good enough or having deeper motives. The tone of the article suggests that you will find a negative motive behind any school's interest in a minority candidate. I agree that minorities should be given opportunities to coach football programs -- if they are consummately qualified, which is also what I'd demand from a white coach before his hiring.

If you want more minority coaches to be hired, don't allow them to be insulted by demanding token interviews just to satisfy some sort of quota. Champion specific minority coaches, such as Michigan's Ron English or Tennessee's Trooper Taylor -- on a case-by-case basis. Otherwise, you kill your credibility.

Finally, there's a reason recruits aren't lining up outside Grambling's gates -- because blue-chip athletes don't care about their coaches' skin color. They care about their qualifications. That's why athletic directors do, too. You ask minority athletes to make a university choice based on skin color, but criticize athletic directors for hiring coaches based on that very criterion. Your double standard is ignorant and unfortunate.

WindRider95 said...

Sounds like Groucho Marx: "I would refuse to join any club that would have me as a member!"

Sir, it will be quite satisfying when the Original human is no longer simply just the gladiator and pawn of the fair skinned manipulators.

But the decider of the thumbs up or thumbs down.

Sir, to Duke, in relation to other coaching jobs....it would be like a company having an opening for a Marketing Manager, An HR manager and a janitor...and saying, 'give the janitor job to the black guy'.

Unknown said...

"Sir, to Duke, in relation to other coaching jobs....it would be like a company having an opening for a Marketing Manager, An HR manager and a janitor...and saying, 'give the janitor job to the black guy'."

Duke is an elite academic institution and resides in a BCS conference. Our disagreement regarding the merits of Duke notwithstanding, it is silly to rebuke the university for its interest in minority candidates. Having seven minority coaches in D1 is better than having six, isn't it?

You contradict yourself by imploring Division I programs to give minority coaches a chance, then complaining when certain programs you deem unfit do just that.

nation_of_islam_sportsblog said...

"You contradict yourself by imploring Division I programs to give minority coaches a chance, then complaining when certain programs you deem unfit do just that."

Sir, there is no contradiction!

The demand is for EQUAL opportunity.

A job coaching Duke is not EQUAL.

Give the Negro coach a no win situation. Set him up to fail. Then use his failure as an excuse to deny the opportunity elsewhere to others.

That's the game.

Where you been?

nation_of_islam_sportsblog said...

"Duke is an elite academic institution"

Sir, then get a Negro to be the chancellor.

THAT is an opportunity.

Coaching the football team at Duke?

That is an insult.

Unknown said...

"Give the Negro coach a no win situation. Set him up to fail. Then use his failure as an excuse to deny the opportunity elsewhere to others."

I'm not so sure that's Duke's motive, as one of the more liberal, progressive universities in the country.

WindRider95 said...

In 1987, Spurrier became head coach of the Duke Blue Devils. There he led the team to highs it had not reached in many years, including the ACC title in 1989. Coach Spurrier received the ACC Coach of the Year award in 1988 and 1989.

It's kind of like Art Briles leaving Houston for the head coaching job at Baylor. He took Houston to bowls in four of his five seasons there, whereas they'd had only two winning seasons in their previous twelve.

At first blush, it would appear that Briles has screwed the pooch, vigorously and with malice aforethought. And yet, consider this: he left Houston and C-USA for Baylor and the Big 12...a step up in terms of conferences. If Briles finishes at .500 or better (he is an offensive innovator), he will be revered as a Baylor icon (as was Hayden Fry) and the 'better schools' will come calling.

Of course, if he screws it up, he'll get canned. At least he has a seven-year deal at $1.8m per year, so the pain won't be quite so great.

Same thing applies at Duke. You don't have to win the ACC...just show improvement...treat the job as a stepping stone.

Remember the quote from Milton's Paradise Lost, "Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven."

nation_of_islam_sportsblog said...

"I'm not so sure that's Duke's motive, as one of the more liberal, progressive universities in the country"

Sir...to continue with your description..."founded by old Southern Conservative tobacco money."

nation_of_islam_sportsblog said...

"Same thing applies at Duke"

Sir, one major difference:

The people in Texas actually would like to have a respectable football team. Therefore, there is the opportunity to build support.

20 years, when Spurrier was in Durham...the people wanted a respectable team. Now, with the evil empire of coach KKK in control...the people don't care.

lost said...

being offered the job of head coach of the football team at DuKKKe is analogous to being handed a bucket of raw chitterlings

Unknown said...

Then I suppose Duke can be racist and it won't bother you -- you only care about the successful programs' actions. "Coach KKK," as you name him, said only a few days ago that Duke deserved to have a successful football program, so don't think he's intentionally squelching the potential for football success. Sure, Duke is a tough job, but it is ludicrous to condemn the university for doing exactly what you're asking, which is to give minorities a chance at a head coaching position.

You have yet to respond to my original point: you contradict yourself when you expect high school athletes to choose a school based on the color of its coach, but condemn athletic directors for choosing their coaches based on color. Minority coaches should be given opportunities just like anyone else, and I applaud any school -- Duke included -- willing to give QUALIFIED minorities a fair shot.

nation_of_islam_sportsblog said...

"You have yet to respond to my original point: you contradict yourself when you expect high school athletes to choose a school based on the color of its coach, but condemn athletic directors for choosing their coaches based on color."

Sir, we are encouraging high school athletes to choose their coach based on color as a means to force the powers that be to fully entertain and seriously consider minority candidates.

There is no contradiction there.

You try to make it a contradiction because the notion of young black males having a say in who leads the programs of the money hungry white men in the big houses completely threatens you and shakes your system to the foundation.

YOur racism isn't rooted in hate.

It is rooted in fear.

Pointing out that wanting to hire Gill based on the fact he is black is a totally asinine argument means that I would like Gill to be turned down for being black?????

Showing that "A" does not necessarity equal "B" must mean that I support "J"...whatever the hell you can dream "J" up to be [laughing hysterically]

Still haven't heard from one person here supporting the logical argument that Turner Gill should be hired by Nebraska becasue he earned it from his success at Buffalo...again, must not help the cause...

Should Rich Rodriguez get the same consideration as Turner Gill, or are all minorities not created equal in your narrowly focused eyes??
