"Coach KKK," as you name him, said only a few days ago that Duke deserved to have a successful football program, so don't think he's intentionally squelching the potential for football success. Sure, Duke is a tough job, but it is ludicrous to condemn the university for doing exactly what you're asking, which is to give minorities a chance at a head coaching position.

You have yet to respond to my original point: you contradict yourself when you expect high school athletes to choose a school based on the color of its coach, but condemn athletic directors for choosing their coaches based on color. There he led the team to highs it had not reached in many years, including the ACC title in 1989. Coach Spurrier received the ACC Coach of the Year award in 1988 and 1989.

It's kind of like Art Briles leaving Houston for the head coaching job at Baylor. He took Houston to bowls in four of his five seasons there, whereas they'd had only two winning seasons in their previous twelve.

At first blush, it would appear that Briles has screwed the pooch, vigorously and with malice aforethought. And yet, consider this: he left Houston and C-USA for Baylor and the Big 12...a step up in terms of conferences. If Briles finishes at .500 or better (he is an offensive innovator), he will be revered as a Baylor icon (as was Hayden Fry) and the 'better schools' will come calling.

Of course, if he screws it up, he'll get canned. At least he has a seven-year deal at $1.8m per year, so the pain won't be quite so great.

Same thing applies at Duke. You don't have to win the ACC...just show improvement...treat the job as a stepping stone.

Remember the quote from Milton's Paradise Lost, "Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven."WindRider95https://www.blogger.com/profile/12035391284008235203noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4820078089278798499.post-13099771364221419642007-11-29T14:38:00.000-05:002007-11-29T14:38:00.000-05:00"Give the Negro coach a no win situation. First you claim ...What, exactly, will satisfy you? First you claim that schools should interview minority interview stats should be considered by recruits, and that it is an insult to blacks when a school doesn't interview them for a head coaching position.

Then, you go on to accuse the schools actually interested in interviewing/hiring minorities -- Duke and Nebraska -- of either not being good enough or having deeper motives. The tone of the article suggests that you will find a negative motive behind any school's interest in a minority candidate. I agree that minorities should be given opportunities to coach football programs -- if they are consummately qualified, which is also what I'd demand from a white coach before his hiring.

If you want more minority coaches to be hired, don't allow them to be insulted by demanding token interviews just to satisfy some sort of quota. Champion specific minority coaches, such as Michigan's Ron English or Tennessee's Trooper Taylor -- on a case-by-case basis. Otherwise, you kill your credibility.

Finally, there's a reason recruits aren't lining up outside Grambling's gates -- because blue-chip athletes don't care about their coaches' skin color. They care about their qualifications. That's why athletic directors do, too. You ask minority athletes to make a university choice based on skin color, but criticize athletic directors for hiring coaches based on that very criterion. Your double standard is ignorant and unfortunate.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04267383569359574626noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4820078089278798499.post-17796006923812901702007-11-29T10:03:00.000-05:002007-11-29T10:03:00.000-05:00I love the Gill Line, HIlarious.
