Viking Victim of Jim Crow Laws

Minnesota Vikings' cornerback Cedric Griffin was arrested over the weekend.

Griffin was out at club, minding his own business and having a wonderful and joyous time. Apparently, the managers of the club noticed a young Negro in their establishment and decided that they would prefer he not be there. Living in the 21st century, the powers that be decided they couldn't simply approach him and say, "No Negroes, you must leave."

The bouncers enacted a tactic often used in the here and now to preclude young Negro males from partaking in the fun of club life. A dress code. But, not just a typical dress code, like "Jacket and Tie Required". No, a dress code written in a spirit that would make Jim Crow smile and look down his nose. A restriction written specifically towards the Negro male.

Young Mr. Griffin was asked to leave because his pants sagged too low. What a novel approach to enforcing a racist entry policy at the club.

Supposedly, America is a free society that respects the cultures of its citizens and encourages diversity. Diversity can only be experienced and cultivated through appreciating and accepting different cultures. And, in case you just rolled into town and plopped off the back of the turnip truck, saggy pants that hang low are a mainstay in Negro culture. To ban their presence is to ban Negro Males.

And that is just what this Jim Crow dress code has done. Making matters worse, the bouncers antagonized and harassed Mr. Griffin to such a point that he lost his cool and ended up leaving in handcuffs in police custody.

Our plea: Rev's Jackson and Sharpton, you have defeated the racist voice of Imus. Now, do what is the number 2 thing on the list of bettering the Negro's existence in America. Get a repeal of club dress codes. There can be no equality without saggy, low riding pants.

No drawers sticking out of our jeans. No peace!

Make the signs now.

Are you serious? As a black man, I can't believe you would want ANYONE to champion this effort. How about Jesse and Al give them a belt?

Do your research, this style of dress comes from men that were arrested and had their belts taken from them in jail.

If you want to be respected, then respect yourself. What you need to point out is that if he simply tightened up his pants, the club couldn't say anything.

Let's fight something worth a grain of salt, instead of protesting brothers with their pants sagging. How about we fight the industry and artists consistently disrespecting our sisters; let's start there.

I don't want to see your drawers no more than you want to see me digging in my nose in public. Both are trifling.

Sir, and do YOUR research. Within the 18-33 demographic for Negro males, almost 30% have been incarcerated in one form or another. THAT is how this became part of the culture.

"If you want to be respected, then respect yourself. What you need to point out is that if he simply tightened up his pants, the club couldn't say anything."

Sir, where does it end? "Tighten up your pants, boy, you can't engage in Negro cultural norms here". That's fine, but what happens when it's "Get your hair permed boy, no brillo pad heads here". And so on? Do you not comprehend that this ISN'T about his pants?

And, as we have stated previously on here: Pants are nothing but cloth shackles devised by the white man to prevent Negroes from exercising their traditional right to dangle!

"Let's fight something worth a grain of salt, instead of protesting brothers with their pants sagging. How about we fight the industry and artists consistently disrespecting our sisters; let's start there."

Sir, we aren't protesting Brothers with their pants sagging. We are making a plea for the Rev's to fight FOR their right to sag! Please pay attention.

"I don't want to see your drawers no more than you want to see me digging in my nose in public. Both are trifling. "

Sir, as long as you pick a winner, we would never try to suppress your right to clear nasal passages.

Wow, this is complete ignorance. No wonder noone respects what the Nation of Islam is doing anymore. You have nothing better to do with your time than try to make this something it isn't?

If the young black man in question wants to wear his pants at his knees, then he should go to a club that doesn't have a dress code against it.

And while you're asking the frauds Jackson and Sharpton to "defeat" something, why not ask them to go to Duke and apologize the the lacrosse players they helped vilify? Ask them if that scholarship still stands for the lying accuser.

I do appreciate the blog though. This is a 10 on the unintentional comedy scale!!!

Nice, blog moderation. So basically you filter what you want. You expect people to be able to wear their underwear on the outside but reserve the right to filter comments. Classic...

Sir, NO. YOUR comment is a 10 on the unintentional comedy scale.

Trust us!

Sir, what has been filtered?

Not a thing. We posted all comments in their entirety. Then responded to specific points in the comments.

If you can't keep up, please don't play.

Thank you.

Sir, let's talk about the other *obvious* aspect of this incident - "unit envy". We, as strong, proud, black men have been endowed by the creator with a certain "advantage" over our lesser pasty members of society. Hence, we cannot physically pull our pants up that high with out risk of sterilization. I believe, sir, that this dress code policy is mean to aide in stopping our procreation and inevitable domination.

Sir, we thank you for your commentary. After drudging through the previous inept attempts to shed light on this situation, it is a breath of fresh air to read the words of someone who gets it.

Anonymous's...please, read Martin's comments. Reflect on them. And try to open your minds and get past the parameters the white devil has set to limit your intellect.

You may have an under-developed thought capacity, but you are still Brothers...and we love you.

Let us help.

While I understand your point, I don’t think it’s proper to say that sagging pants are a part of “negro” culture. There clearly isn’t a single “negro” culture. Moreover, do we really want to be defined by things as trivial as sagging pants? Perhaps emulation of the “30% have been incarcerated in one form or another” is not in our best interest.

Sir, nice of you to decide what is Negro culture and what isn't. And to decide what is in the Negro communities best interest. I'd say that 30% agree, PLUS the large percentage that emulate it agree, well, that would be a pretty fair indicator that it IS part of the culture.

Maybe YOU aren't part of the culture? Just saying...

You are correct. I am in no position to say what THE “negro” culture is. Neither are you. It doesn’t exist. Black peoples’ interests, upbringings, etc. are far too divergent to claim that there is a single culture. No one of which is necessarily more authentic than all of the others. I can only say what my culture is as a “negro.” I refuse to let any other person dictate what blackness or “negro”-ness is to me. I stand by my assertion regarding the 30%. Disagree if you will. But, don’t conflate sagging pants with blackness.

"But, don’t conflate sagging pants with blackness."

Sir, if the OVERWHELMING majority of Negro males do it...then it IS Negro-ness. We are sorry if that hurts your sensibilities. We really are. But understand. Culture is what people do or participate in, and, if an incredible proportion of people DO it...then it is part of the culture. If this is to complex, say so. We can help.

How do you think stereotypes come about....by accident?

So is Adolf Goodell going to suspend Brother Griffin for the season as well?

I guess he might not, since Griffin wasn't convicted of anything.

Oh, wait...neither was Pacman.

Sir, we want to know if Leinhart and Brady are going to be suspended for their free flowing sperm!
