Bobby Petrino: DeAngelo Hall and Alge Crumpler were right

Bobby Petrino.

The equivalent of the promiscuous girl of the coaching world. Always ready to listen to an offer. Often willing to put out. Quick to leave the groom standing at the altar.

Or in this case, cheat on the honey moon.

Petrino's stay in the ATL has been tainted almost from the start. He was unable to give tremendous, but wayward, QB Michael Vick the type of guidance a young man under considerable pressure could expect from a seasoned head coach/mentor. And quickly things fell apart.

Clearly, Vick didn't receive good advice from the organization and ended up responding to the early accusations with a dubious denial. Obviously, a caring and nurturing infrastructure would have given him the proper counsel necessary to take responsibility from the get go. Only after things spun out of control and Vick was able to separate himself from the organization did he come clean and accept responsibility.

So, the reality is that much of the distress caused by the Vick situation was a product of Petrino's botched leadership.

Certainly, Vick's team mates recognized this, and it compromised Petrino's ability to effectively be the man in charge of the team.

Early in the season, DeAngelo Hall and Alge Crumpler received some negative press for openly wondering about Petrino's ability to lead an NFL team. For challenging Petrino's demands that the team buy into his system, but not providing any real leadership for the team.

The media seemed to enjoy painting Hall and Crumpler as out of line or disgruntled primadonas.

Well, vindication is sweet. And Hall and Crumpler were correct all along. Petrino gave up long ago and went through 3/4 of a season as a charade. Certainly he wasn't wooed by Arkansas between the Monday night game and the Tuesday announcement.

And, just as certainly, Hall and Crumpler's instinctual questioning of the validity and sincerity of Petrino and his 'system' was spot on the money. Petrino's 'system' was an empty shell that couldn't fool real NFL players. His leadership was a corrupt and cowardly masquerade.

And Hall and Crumpler should be commended for having the awareness, commitment and esprit de corps to put the teams needs ahead of their own and question the rotten smell emanating from the coach's office.

In this day and age of selfish players with agendas, it is refreshing to be able to look back on this and unequivocally state the players were one hundred percent correct and that the media owes them an apology.

Certainly this isn't the first time that a group of Negroes sensed and spoke out about the white man in the corner office using them for his personal gain. It just happens to be one of the times the media can't hide it.

Sir, Mr. Vick was certainly no victim. He was culpable for putting himself in a position in which the government could formulate a case against him.

Bobby Petrino is a joke, and deserves to be treated like one. But to put any blame on him whatsoever for what has happened to Mike Vick is ridiculous.
I have no sympathy at all for a grown man that doesn't know enough that it isn't okay to abuse and kill innocent dogs. Not only that, he "helped"(lets be real, he probably was the sole investor) finance the entire operation.
Maybe he could've used better guidance in admitting guilt at an earlier stage, but I honestly don't give a crap. He deserves everything coming to him for what he did.
I am in no way one of those crazy animal lovers, but its common sense that it is cruel and unjust to do what Vick did.
P.S-Don't start off your response to my message with "sir" and pretend like you respect me, because you are clearly a racist motherfucker who thinks anybody who isn't black is a conspirator against every negro in the country. By including these Negroes in the report, Mitchell has shamelessly ignored countless other white players whom he could have called out instead and placed the weight of his alleged "findings" on the shoulders of the Original Man. The only way to avenge this gross misbehavior is to declare Negro pariah Barry Bonds commissioner of the league. Only then will justice truly be served.

Who's hopes and dreams? Most of the Bruvas I know in Atlanta are 'hoping and dreaming that they can buy a new car, take a vacation and pay their mortgage! Now don’t get me wrong, I love sports, but If you're over the age of 19 and your 'hopes and dreams' have anything to do with some dork throwing a football you have aserious personality deficiency.

Oh yeah check out this article on ESPN about the top quarterbacks in the NFL, you'll really like it

That's in direct response to the statement you made in one of your Tebow articles, something along the lines of the "desperate attempt for whites to win back the quarterback position." Well, seems to me they're doing pretty well considering they have the top 8 ranked quarterbacks.
I'm not saying that the article is perfect, but I honestly think it's pretty accurate. Two years ago I'd put Mcnabb higher, but not with all the injuries now.

"Sir, defenseless?"
Yes, defenseless, dogs aren't born to fight or born as vicious killers you idiot, but if they're trained that way they're going to be become that way.

"Those were killer fighting dogs that Vick ensured will not be a threat to others....you owe the man a thank you."
Yeah, I should thank the guy for running an illegal operation that trained dogs to become vicious killers, than killed them brutally.

To clear one thing up again, I am not some crazed dog lover. But anybody with common sense knows what he did was wrong. I'm not saying he can't redeem himself, but the 23 months he was sentenced to is very fair. I hope he can make it back to the NFL because it was fun watching him play, and maybe my Giants will get him because Eli blows huge dick.

So let me get this straight, you think its okay to run and finance an operation that involves gambling, fighting, and the murder of dogs?
Again, like I said before, even if its "tapping into their natural instinct", they still are only these vicious fighters because they were influenced to do so.
By saying this you are basically stating that you think it is okay to manipulate and brutally kill animals for simple entertainment.
Don't even bother comparing this to hunting, because hunting does not involve drowning, electrocuting, or slamming animals into the ground as a way of killing.

No, their generally rendered lame from a shot from a quarter of a mile away with a high-powered rifle, at which time the hunters take a leisurely stroll to inspect their agonized, dying prey and finally finish it up close with their shooting pistol for the sole purpose of cutting it's head off for display above the fireplace in the den where the young ones gather to play Parchessi.

NOIS you bring up excellent points once again..couldnt agree more...As easy as it is to blame outside forces for the ills of the world, it really just comes down to nature...for example Vick just wasnt born with the ability to judge right from wrong and nothing could have altered that.

husky930 said...

murder of dogs"

Sir, the dogs were murderers.

This is getting ridiculous, you keep avoiding the main issue here that I have been saying over and over again. Vick made these dogs the way they were, whether or not he was "tapping into their natural instincts" or he simply trained them like he said. I've said it several times before and I'll say it again, these dogs aren't born fighters or vicious murderers. Dogs personalities and behavior patterns are solely dependent on their owners and the people that train/"tap into their natural instinct".
The fact that you call it "capitol" punishment is an absolute joke, were these dogs tried in court, were they convicted of a crime? Lets say they were(haha, funny picture of a dog in court), does Vick have the authority to perform capital punishment on these dogs?

nation_of_islam_sportsblog said...

"for example Vick just wasnt born with the ability to judge right from wrong and nothing could have altered that."

Sir, or we could go with the training part of my proposition.

Vick was trained by the old white men making millions of dollars off him that right and wrong don't matter and they would put up with any thing (until the a govt prosecutor got involved) to make a buck.

Vick was trained from the moment he was ID'd as a superior athlete that he could get away without weighing right and wrong in his actions.

So, if we indict Vick for training dogs to be killers....Let's indict the old white men that run sports in this country for training Vick to put his self interest above right and wrong.

--Truth is right. Does anyone actually believe that Vick (before his boys turned on him) initially denied everything BECAUSE THE ORGANIZATION TOLD HIM TO???

Hello!! He was trying to lie his way out of his own mess. With his bigtime lawyers it may have worked has his buddies not sold him out.

Vick's misguided dogfighting/killing enterprise has nothing to do with the Falcon's organization whatsoever. They gave him PLENTY of money so that he wouldn't have to ever be a part of such stupid things. Vick had everything, and he made his own choice to risk it all. That is on him and him alone, he's a grown man now.

The Falcon's organization backed him through all the drug issues and what-not that came up here and there. They were always in his corner. Vick was their guy.

What more proof do you need than the dealing of Matt Schaub, who at the time was one of the best backups in the league?? The Falcons got rid of him and in turn kept Vick as the face of their franchise.

Ended up being a huge mistake, of course, as the team would be much better off with Schaub under center.

It is a shame we can't put all of them in prison for failing to make Mr. Vick into a worhtwhile human being. After all, it takes a Village.

And in this case, it was clearly the village that failed.

Unfortunately, the laws in this country are designed to only punish the actor of the crime, and not all those people who helped make the criminal.

True. In this business the primary concern is to field a team rooted in ethics. Mike Vick was nothing but a cash cow. A good-for-nothing whos only claim in the business was funneling cash into the organization and the companies which garnered his endorsement. Schaub on the other hand is much better franchise piece, as is evident in the meteoric rise of the Texans.

My reasoning behind saying that was in one of your earlier posts you said "the government can formulate a case against him". That definitely makes it sound as if his sentencing is some sort of conspiracy, even though its pretty clear cut. He broke the law and went to jail for it, nothing too complex.

lgf, I am not suggesting that Schaub was the better or more marketable guy to build the franchise around. The Texans may not be a great team but they are improving and Schaub is part of the reason things are looking up for Houston (injuries have been unfortunate, though).

Anyhow... I was merely pointing out that the Falcons DID stick by Vick and gave him a huge vote of confidence as their guy, a decision that IN HINDSIGHT was, of course, the wrong one. There is no arguing otherwise.

Vick endangered his own career and screwed the Falcons by taking part in his illegal enterprise, regardless of what his motives were. He was given everything and blew it big time.

People can make all the excuses in the world for him, and paint him as the victim in this. They can blame the Falcons organization for not "mentoring" him or whatever. It doesn't change the facts that he is responsible for his actions. Get over it.

Besides, while Vick was an exceptional athlete and very talented player, he never quite lived up to the enormous hype around him since entering the league. The way he was hyped up you'd have thought he'd be a top quarterback by the time all this went down...

"if so, then you surely cannot argue for the way the white devil has treated all other races because he simply believed they were lesser animals."

Sir, we find it interesting that you analogize by rationalizing humans as animals.

And use the white animal as your king of the food chain.

And then try to safeguard your poor analogy and skewered logic which proves no point and back no relevent argument with a comment to the effect that if you we don't think what you think we are morons.

Your logic is flawed and your analogy is not related to the discussion.

All it does is serve as means for you to try to slide your racist point of view into an otherwise meaningful and informative discussion.

do you truly not believe that humans are animals? i suggest you take any basic science class then and learn about the modern world. also, simply because you do not understand an analogy does not mean that it is a poor one. i was simply pointing out that rationalizing dog fighting by way of reasoning that dogs are below humans is poor logic. much the same way that reasoning one particular ethnicity is lesser than another. also, i was not creating that analogy, sir, but merely referencing what was a common belief up until the last century. sorry you don't know your history well and that you are unable to comprehend simple sentences.

So, if we indict Vick for training dogs to be killers....Let's indict the old white men that run sports in this country for training Vick to put his self interest above right and wrong.

Or we could blame Vick's father for not sticking around to raise him the right way...morality is taught from an early age and Vick is a victim...unfortunately so are 70 percent of his community. But continue to blame the white man...whether they give a black man opportunity or not they are the cause of all the ills in the community...oh wait i forgot slavery has made it impossible for a black man to raise his children.

Vick was trained from the moment he was ID'd as a superior athlete that he could get away without weighing right and wrong in his actions.

why wasnt he being trained in weighing right and wrong in his actions before he was ID'd as a superior athlete...hmmm....i know you are ugly but try to look in the mirror sometimes.

Unfortunately, the laws in this country are designed to only punish the actor of the crime, and not all those people who helped make the criminal.

wow...

brendan... white bread... you need to think through how you come off when you analogize being an animal to being black (or "ethnicity")... racist much?

Regardless of whether dog fighting is right or wrong, you make a poor argument, with, yes, poor analogies...

The thing is: dogs ARE below humans, regardless of whether dogfighting is right or wrong... blacks (or other "ethinicities"") are NOT below humans, whitey just tried to treat them that way...

...dayumm... this cracka need a thump upside da head...

Sir, seriously, if you consider humans to be on par with animals.

We can desist with any rational discussion.

Because animals can't have rational discussions, can they, sir?

Exactly.

And, we'll take some basic science classes when you take some basic logic classes, fair enough?

From CNN: The NFL has fined five Atlanta Falcons players after they showed support for disgraced quarterback Michael Vick during the Falcons nationally televised loss to the New Orleans Saints last Monday.

The NFL said the very public displays of support for Vick violated NFL uniform code policy in a couple of cases and, in fact, was so "in the face" of NFL leadership that the fines were doubled in some cases.

Tight end Alge Crumpler, cornerbacks DeAngelo Hall and Chris Houston and wide receiver Roddy White were fined $10,000 each. Hall and Crumpler wore black eye strips with writing on them supporting Vick. Hall also carried a poster supporting Vick which he taped to the back of the bench where players sit.

It would appear that once again, the NFL is the No Fun League.

Or perhaps, something else.

Sir, something else indeed....our most recent post sheds righteous light on this topic and provides the accurate interpretation of the NFL's decision, the players intention and the social meaning.

As usual.

Probably a bit late to comment on this post, but a pretty good article by Pat Forde (linked to by another blog) talking about Petrino's history of taking the money and running.
