From Alcorn State to the Hall of Fame.
Not bad. Not bad at all for a guy who ended up at Alcorn State (even tho he was recruited by major colleges) because they were the only program that would let him play quarterback.
Certainly, McNair, despite the obvious prejudice against Negro QB's, proved that a strong arm and commanding field generalship could shatter stereotypes and allow for the attainment of a dream. A dream fortified by an unmatch heart and the ability to play through injuries that sidelined many others. A dream achieved in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, layed out by a system hell bent on maintaining the status quo and preserving the 'face' of the NFL.
Steve McNair had a dream. And, praise be, he had a role model.
Following the path of the the only Negro to QB a team to Super Bowl victory (Doug Williams), McNair sought refuge from the systemic position reclassification enforced by white run major programs by attending an HBCU. In the low country of Mississippi, an NFL franchise QB developed and matured without the meddlesome interference of the establishment's effort to turn him into a receiver or DB.
By the grace of the power on high, McNair found himself drafted by the one franchise that understood the value, necessity and requirement of having a Negro field general. The Houston Oilers had been led by the first NFL Hall of Fame Negro QB (Warren Moon), and realized that there was truly no substitute.
Interestingly enough, McNair's tenure with the franchise (which became the Tennessee Titans) was shortened by the drafting of possibly the next great Negro QB, Vince Young (of course, injuries played a factor as well).
Off McNair went to Baltimore, where he led the Ravens to a 13-3 season before injuries (received behind offensive lines populated by predominantly white players) got the best of him.
Now, Baltimore is left with two QB's on their roster: The proven failure Kyle Boller. And the Heisman Trophy winning Troy Smith.
We salute the career of the unmatchable Steve McNair.
And more importantly, we acknowledge the lineage of the Negro QB Family Tree that McNair followed and helped extend.
Following Williams' blue print to reach the NFL. Then following in the footsteps of Moon in Houston. And finally, his performance and leadership providing the opportunities for Young and Smith to continue the genealogy.
Imagine if Bobby Bowden had gotten his way and McNair signed as a DB.
What a slow, boring and methodical NFL we'd have today!

College Negro QB of the Week
Kansas State lived up to our expectations, and Ron Prince put together a brilliant game plan that left that Texas head coach guessing on the sideline.
As a result of the K-State effort and victory, our CNQBW this week is Josh Freeman.
Freeman didn't put up overwhelming stats, but his game management and leadership were essential in leading the Wildcats to a convincing victory over the overrated 'Horns.
Freeman posted a 22/38 177 and 1 TD day.
Runner up this week was Juice Williams of Illinois.
Williams also was not statistically dominant. But, like Freeman, managed the game and provided the field generalship that has become the hallmark of CNQBW winners.
Williams is shaping up to be a solid qb. And clearly, the dominance of the Negro QB at the top of the draft will continue for the next several years (read: eternity).

College Negro QB of the Week
This week saw some heated competition for the CNQBW honors.
Previous winner Dennis Dixon of Oregon lead the Ducks in turning a close game into a second half romp against up and coming Stanford.
Dixon threw for 367 yards and four TD's to bolster his claim as top QB in the PAC-10.
Statistically, that is tough to compete with. But our winner this week gets the nod based on his leadership in the face of adversity and his team's second straight impressive comeback victory.
At this point, Andre' Woodson HAS to be the Heisman front runner. HAS to be!
Woodson's numbers don't tell the full story; 265 yds and 2 TD's. The full story is one of superior field generalship and complete control of every situation.

The battle for top QB in the nation is really only a two man race. There are a few QB's out west putting up big numbers. But they are system QB's. And the young man at USC is surrounded by so much talent that the notion of him being the top QB in the country can't even legitimately be considered.

College Negro QB Of The Week
This week saw the meeting of two of college footballs most storied programs, on the rare occasion that both teams were 0-2.
Notre Dame took on Michigan. And, despite ND's crushing defeat, this week's CNQBW is the Fighting Irish's Demetrius Jones.
Jones had no statistics.
In fact, Jones is no longer on the team. Nonetheless, he garners this week's honor based on his decision to transfer away from ND.
After watching Charlie Weis conduct two mostly successful campaigns with rosters laden with holdovers from the Ty Willingham era, Jones understood that any success the Irish had encountered during those seasons was due to the groundwork laid by the forthright, honest and hardworking Negro head coach Willingham.
Now, with the bulk of Willingham's player gone, Weis is left exposed for the genius he is not. A paper tiger. A coach who was handed his unearned contract extension based on the talent brought in and developed by the very man that was unceremoniously run out of South Bend to make room for Weis' expansive hips and rotund belly.
Notre Dame is supposedly a school steeped in and based in tradition. Wake the echos. Win one for the Gipper. Touchdown Jesus. The Golden Dome. Legends abound.
But, for a school that seems to live in past, they certainly have a poor memory.

Two teams with Negro QB's destroy Michigan, but the 'genius' Weis essentially shows his Negro QB the quickest route off the plantation.
Runner up this week was Andre' Woodson of Kentucky.
Woodson threw for 275 yards, 4TD's and 0 INT's in leading the Wildcats to victory against over hyped and over rated Louisville.
More importantly, Woodson completely out shined and outperformed the supposed shoe in for 'first QB taken' in the 2008 draft, the over hyped and over rated Brian Brohm.

College Negro QB of the Week: Are You Paying Attention, Charlie Weis?
For the second week in a row, the Big House in Michigan provided the venue for our College Negro QB of the Week.
(note- we have changed the name from Negro College QB of the week...as apparently, this was too confusing for some of our more special readers to grasp.)
Oregon rolled into the Big House under the leadership of Negro QB Dennis Dixon.
Dixon dismantled the Wolverines with 292 yards passing and 3 TD's. He added another TD and 76 yards on the ground, as Michigan was dealt their worst defeat since 1968.
Michigan has faced 2 Negro QB's to start the season and both games have resulted in historic Michigan defeats.
We wonder if Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis is paying attention? Will Weis follow the lead of App State and Oregon and unleash his own Negro QB on the Wolverines? Or will he allow the freshman heir to Brady Quinn's ambiguous preferences to give Michigan their first victory of '07?
Actually, Weis will probably be too distracted this week with Golden Domers reversing course and demanding that Negro coach Ty Willingham be reinstated as the grand poobah of the program.

New Feature: Negro 'College QB' of the Week
Introducing a new feature on NOIS.
Many 'blogs' contaminate Blogfrica with player of the week type deals. We at NOIS evaluated the situation and came up with the most important unmet need in that area.
Negro 'College QB' of the Week.
As we were all reminded last college season, the most important players in the game of college football are the Negro QB's. Despite the media's attempts to convince us that good games against Army and Navy were watershed Brady Quinn events, we all saw the realities of college football.
Heisman Trophy. Negro QB.
National Championship. Negro QB. (Inevitable. Both QB's in the game were Negro QB's.)
Top draft pick. Negro QB.
Perhaps the most startling development in this was that 3 different men were involved in those feats.
The 2007 season started out with yet another unmatched event, catalyzed by a Negro QB.
Armanti Edwards led Appalachian State to the greatest upset in modern college football history. Marching his Mountaineers into the Big House and a hostile crowd of 110,000 soon to be suicidal fans.
'Money' threw for 227 yards and 3 Td's and rushed for another 62 yards and a TD.
Perhaps his most telling stat from the game won't be recorded until the season is over.
When Lloyd Carr is fired.
Runner Up honors go to WVU Patrick White.
White threw for 192 yards and 2 TD's and rushed for 97 yards and 2 TD's.
